M&M Brownie Ingredient Notes

Chocolate Chips: I used semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe, but you can use any type you'd like- dark chocolate for a richer flavor, milk chocolate for a sweeter flavor, mini chocolate chips if that's what you have on hand!

Cocoa Powder: I used dutch-processed cocoa powder, and I swear it made the flavor of these brownies so much deeper!

All-Purpose Flour: Make sure to measure your flour properly! Either use the spoon and level method by spooning your flour into your measuring cups before using knife to sweep across the top of the cup, or use a kitchen scale to measure 70g exactly.

M&Ms: I use mini M&Ms in this recipe to spread the crunchy chocolate pieces throughout the brownies more evenly, but you can use any color or flavor of M&Ms that your heart desires!

Step by Step Process

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of M&Ms can I use in this recipe?

I use Mini M&Ms and recommend them for the best chocolate candy distribution throughout the brownies, but you can totally spice these up with any type of M&M you'd like! I think it would be super fun to switch this recipe up with holiday-themed M&Ms!

How do I make brownies chewy and fudgy?

Make sure not to overmix when adding the dry ingredients to the wet batter. Doing so can create dry brownies. Additionally, make sure to only bake the brownies until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with some batter. Do not bake until a toothpick comes out clean because the brownies will already be dry and cakey by that point. All ovens are different, so start checking the M&M Brownies early!

Can I double this recipe?

I haven't tried doubling this recipe. If you do, I'd recommend baking in a 9x13 inch pan for best results! The brownies may require a few extra minutes in the oven- just make sure they are crinkly and shiny on top and the toothpick comes out just slightly wet with some batter!

Expert Tips

M&Ms on Top: Mix most of the M&Ms into the batter, but reserve a handful to sprinkle on top before baking! It adds a pop of color and gives an extra fun crunch!

Parchment Paper: Brownies can get pretty sticky! For easier removal, cutting, and serving, line your baking pan with parchment paper. I also spray the paper with cooking spray to make things even easier!

Check for Doneness Early: Start checking your brownies a few minutes before the recommended baking time. All ovens are different, and dry, cakey brownies are the worst! If a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs, they're ready. Overbaking will result in dry brownies, so it's better to underbake slightly for the fudgy, chewy texture we all dream of!

Storing

  • Cool Completely: Allow the brownies to cool completely before storing them. If the brownies are still warm, it can create condensation in your container and, ultimately, alter the texture of the brownies! Additionally, cutting will be a million times easier if you wait for the brownies to firm up while they cool.
  • Wrap Individually: If you have time, wrap each brownie piece tightly in plastic wrap. This helps retain moisture and prevents them from drying out.
  • Room Temperature: Store the container at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Brownies can stay fresh at room temperature for 3-4 days!
  • Freezing: If you want to store brownies for a longer period, you can totally freeze them! After wrapping in plastic wrap, place the brownies in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. Brownies can be frozen for up to 3 months. To thaw, leave them at room temperature for a few hours or heat them up in the microwave!

Description

These M&M Brownies are the chewiest, fudgiest brownies with colorful candy pieces mixed in and on top. They are made in one bowl, have the most gorgeous crinkle tops, and have the deepest, richest chocolate flavor!

Ingredients

Scale
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter
  • ⅔ cup (120g) chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup (21g) cocoa powder
  • ⅓ cup (80g) light brown sugar
  • ½ cup (105g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (50g), cool
  • 1 large egg yolk, cool
  • ½ cup (70g) all purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅔ cup (114g ) mini M&Ms

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray for easy removal, cutting, and serving.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave in 30-second intervals, melt chopped butter pieces and chocolate chips together until smooth. Make sure to stir constantly over the heat or thoroughly in between rounds in the microwave to avoid burning the mixture.
  3. After the butter and chocolate mixture is melted together, pour the cocoa powder into the warm mixture. This helps to deepen the chocolate flavor of the cocoa powder.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk light brown sugar, granulated sugar, cool eggs, and cool egg yolk together until smooth.
  5. Then, pour the chocolate mixture into the sugar and eggs mixture. Mix until combined throughout.
  6. Add the all purpose flour and salt to the batter, and whisk only until you see the flour pieces disappear into the batter. Avoid overmixing to prevent dry, cakey brownies.
  7. Fold the Mini M&Ms into the batter with a rubber spatula until evenly dispersed throughout.
  8. Transfer the batter into your prepared pan. Sprinkle additional Mini M&Ms on top of the brownie batter for an elevated, colorful look after the brownies bake. Bake the brownies for 28-33 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the pan comes out with some brownie batter on it. Do not bake until a toothpick comes out fully clean, as this indicates that the brownies have been overbaked.
  9. For cleaner brownie slices, let the brownies cool for about an hour before slicing and serving. Store tightly covered or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
